Pho Thin Hanoi Vietnamese Restaurant sits quietly on Washington Avenue in San Leandro, bringing a slice of northern Vietnamese comfort food to the East Bay. This spot is best known for its Northern-style pho, served in notably large bowls that brim with fresh rice noodles and a clear, flavorful broth enhanced by a hint of garlic. The emphasis here is on the authenticity of Hanoi’s culinary traditions, which is reflected in both the menu and the way the food is prepared.

The atmosphere is straightforward and no-frills—a practical place where the focus sticks firmly to the food rather than décor or fancy touches. It tends to attract a mix of locals who appreciate a hearty meal with genuine flavors, from pho enthusiasts to families and weekday lunch crowds. Bringing a container might not be a bad idea if you want to take home some of the ample broth leftover, a common occurrence given the generous portions.

The menu offers classic Vietnamese dishes beyond pho, including crispy egg rolls, spring rolls (gỏi cuốn), and unique options like the broken rice combinations featuring various meats and tofu, which mirror traditional Hanoi street food experiences. The iced coffee also serves as a refreshing complement to the sometimes savory-rich dishes.

Service is generally helpful though low-key, fitting for a neighborhood eatery rather than a polished dining experience. It’s an accessible choice for anyone looking to explore Northern Vietnamese flavors without the typical southern Vietnamese pho style dominating the Bay Area market.

  • Best for: Those craving authentic Northern Vietnamese pho and classic dishes in generous portions.
  • Who will enjoy it most: Pho purists, noodle lovers, and diners comfortable with straightforward, no-frills dining.
  • Best time to visit: Lunch or early evening to avoid any tired staff moments late at night; the place moves steadily throughout the day.
  • Atmosphere to expect: Casual, bustling but unpretentious, with a focus on getting food to the table efficiently.

This is my to go place for pho Hanoi. I have tried pretty much everything on the menu. Today, I had #17, pho tai with fresh wide noodles. Make sure to order clear broth if you do not want too much oil. I always have the cooked bean sprouts too. I usually order 17, my go to order. The broth is very tasty and generally do not need to add hoisin sauce. Just a fresh squeezed lemon. This place is not that busy on the weekdays. Last week I had bun bo hue, spicy noodles soup with a large beef rib. This place bun bo hue is ok only. However, their northern dish of bun cha Hanoi is really good, must try.

The broth seems different from most pho places I have been to. I think the secret is more garlic. Prices can be a little high, but the food is good. I paid over $30 for a bowl of standard pho and an appetizer with no drink. The pho bowl was very big, though. Service wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. Maybe they were a bit tired since it was close to 9 pm.

Pho Thin is one of the best places for Northern style Pho in the SF Bay Area. Fresh rice noodles are much more satisfying compared to the dry noodles that most restaurants utilize in the area. The staff is always friendly & helpful. Give this spot a try & you won’t regret it.

Good food. The Pho comes out in a huge bowl so there will be a lot of broth leftover (bring a container for the extra soup). The quality is pretty good. Fresh pho noodles and a good amount of meat. The meat in the bánh mì is very marinated. $10 for a sandwich means inflation is real!

The food is delicious. We ordered chicken salad and their traditional phớ, it's spot on.

Recently opened, the food was good, portions large. No condiments on the table. Some different items to choose from that had not been seen at other Pho places. I chose the fried steak & garlic Pho which offered a unique broth flavor. Eggs rolls were full & not oily in the least. I wondered if they were air fried. Many "broken rice " dishes, which I'd never heard of before, were on the menu. When we went, no one spoke more than a few words in English, so it was difficult to ask any questions about new to us menu choices. In general, I'm sad that none of the pho places I frequent, offer traditional, dripped in your glass, coffee anymore. It seems the to-go versions in a plastic cup, started during the pandemic, is now a regular thing. It's just not the same. They were very generous with the take away containers; they were help yourself & free! And we had lots of leftovers!
